1989—CALGARY FLAMES, 4–2 OVER MONTREAL CANADIENS

* * *

On April 14, 1928, the Montreal Maroons lost the fifth and deciding match of the Stanley Cup Finals to the New York Rangers in the Montreal Forum. On eleven separate occasions since that date, Lord Stanley’s cherished Mug had been hoisted in victory at the Forum and each time Montreal had been the team doing the raising. In 1989, the Calgary Flames became the first visiting team since Lester Patrick’s Broadway Blues to taste victory in the hallowed halls of the Forum. The Flames, led by their mustachioed cocaptain Lanny McDonald and bolstered by the gritty determination of Doug Gilmour, Joe Mullen, Al MacInnis, and the diminutive Theo Fleury, buried the Forum’s resident ghosts of championships past with a clever display of tough, hard-nosed hockey.

McDonald, who was actually resigned to the pine for the first three games of the Finals, scored his final NHL goal four minutes into the second period of game 6 to give the Flames a lead they would never relinquish. Al MacInnis, who nabbed the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs, became the first defenseman to lead the playoffs in scoring, and set a rearguard record by scoring at least one point per game in 17 straight games. The Flames’ road to the winner’s circle included a four-game sweep of Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in the Smythe Division finals and a five-game romp over the Chicago Blackhawks in the conference finals before they reached Montreal.
